WHAT TO SEE AND DO IN SAINT-JEAN-DE-MONTS
A small town on the Coast of Light, Saint-Jean-de-Monts has 8 kilometres of beaches which are great for walking, horse riding or even land yachting. The forest and marsh are also terrific spots for long nature hikes. You can tour the town and explore the surrounding area by tourist train, bicycle, go-kart or electric scooter.
Thrill-seekers will undoubtedly love Explora Parc, a leisure park in the middle of the forest. With family or friends, you can do a treetop adventure course or take part in laser tag, archery tag, archery, trampolining or virtual reality games. A treasure hunt for the whole family gives kids the chance to make their first attempts at orienteering whilst having fun.

TOWN HISTORY
Ancient accounts tell us that Saint-Jean-de-Monts was under the control of the lords of Le Bois Masson well before the French Revolution. The town was reborn under the reign of Napoleon I, who issued a decree endowing the municipality with a secondary school. Unfortunately, that institution would be relocated to Bourbon-Vendée. On that spot, the town hall and a presbytery were built.
You should know that this town in the Vendée department, between Saint-Hilaire-de-Riez and Notre-Dame-de-Monts underwent enormous work to stabilize the sand of its beaches. The goal of course was to prevent the sand from taking over a substantial part of the hinterland. In 1862, the French State entrusted the management of the dunes and sand to the Water and Forestry Administration.
Five years later, in 1867, the beaches of Saint-Jean-de-Monts began to be visited by thousands of swimmers. In the early 20th century, the town’s population was recorded as 5,000 inhabitants.
MORE THAN 8 KILOMETRES OF BEACHES
The town of Saint-Jean-de-Monts saw tremendous progress, particularly in the area around the beach. So many hotels were built that, a few years before the First World War, it had nearly 100 buildings containing housing and shops. Saint-Jean-de-Monts boasts 8 kilometres of beaches which attract thousands of tourists from France and even other European countries.
They travel there for unforgettable Vendean holidays, engaging in water sports for some and camping for others. In 1947, the French State eliminated the railway line passing through town. Luckily, this regrettable state of affairs did not prevent the development of the seaside resort’s tourism.
