Located in the Vendée’s Bay of Biscay, Noirmoutier Island is known for its mild climate which makes it a great seaside destination all year round. Its main scenery comprises salt marshes, forests, dunes and beaches, protected by two national nature preserves. The island is chiefly known for its salt, which has been harvested using traditional methods for the last 1,500 years.
Although the site has been inhabited since the Lower Palaeolithic, the island’s turbulent history truly began when the monk Saint Philibert settled on it in 674 and founded a monastery. At the time, the island belonged to the lords of La Garnache, who tried in vain to protect the island from Viking invasions. Over the centuries, the island was attacked by the English, the Spanish and the Dutch, and also suffered from the ravages of the Hundred Years’ War in the 14th century and a 16th century invasion by Huguenot privateers. For a long time, it played an important role in the tobacco industry. In the 17th century, sea walls were erected, and the land was drained to create salt marshes and fields.
Noirmoutier Island is connected to the continent by a bridge 30 minutes away from Les Biches but also by a flooding road, the Gois Passage. Just 31 kilometres from our campsite in the Vendée, it is the best possible way to reach the island at low tide, a real experience in and of itself!
