THE HISTORY OF ILE D’YEU
Ile d’Yeu was inhabited in the Neolithic Period, nearly 5,000 years ago, by people who left behind traces of their lives which are still visible today. The Romans too took over the island and left coins behind as the final sign of their time there. Monks from Ireland settled in a community on Ile d’Yeu and built Saint-Sauveur Church and a monastery there in the 6th century.
Those buildings were destroyed after the Norman invasions of Europe during the 9th century. At the end of this period, the monks erected a new monastery and a church at Ker Chalon.
The island would be invaded many more times thereafter, resulting in the construction of a small fort which was converted into a château a little later. Today, you can still visit the monuments of yesteryear, prehistoric sites, and more.
A FANTASTIC TOURIST ATTRACTION
Its glorious past and historical remains make Ile d’Yeu a tourist site which is an absolute must. There, you will find the old château built on a rocky islet during the period of invasions. The dolmens, menhirs and stones with cupules (small hollows) are clear evidence of the men and women who existed during the prehistoric era. The lighthouses and small ports are reminders of the island’s maritime history.
Located 17 kilometres off the coast of the Vendée, the island can be reached by boat or helicopter. You will take great pleasure in exploring the coastal dunes and long beaches filled with fine sand. Hiking is a terrific activity on the island, as are horse-drawn carriage rides. You can also visit the Port de la Meule and the Grand Phare (Great Lighthouse).
